Talk to us on WhatsApp

Free, confidential first call, wherever you are in the world.

Maybe it's the racing thoughts at 3am. The tight chest before a meeting. The plans you cancel because leaving the house feels like too much. Maybe you've been coping for years, and you're just tired of coping.

Anxiety can make the whole world feel louder than it should. Holistic Recovery Bali is a private mental health retreat in Bali, where you can step out of the noise and learn, properly, how to turn it down.

Understanding anxiety

Anxiety is your body's alarm system doing its job too well. When it fires too often, too strongly or for no clear reason, it stops protecting you and starts running your life.

It shows up in different ways: constant worry (generalised anxiety), panic attacks, social anxiety, health anxiety, or a background tension that never quite switches off. It often travels with other things too, like poor sleep, burnout, low mood, or drinking to take the edge off.

You're far from alone. The World Health Organization estimates that 359 million people worldwide live with an anxiety disorder, making it the most common mental health condition on the planet. It's also one of the most treatable, yet only about one in four people who need help ever get it.

What's happening in the brain and body

Anxiety starts in the brain's threat-detection system. When it senses danger, real or imagined, it releases stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol. Your heart speeds up, your breathing gets shallow, your muscles tense and your thoughts race. That's useful if you're in real danger. When it fires all the time, it becomes exhausting.

Avoidance keeps the cycle going. Every time you avoid something that makes you anxious, you feel short-term relief, and your brain learns that the thing really was dangerous. Over time, life gets smaller. Good treatment gently reverses that learning.

Why anxiety and alcohol so often go together

Alcohol calms the nervous system for a few hours, which is why so many people use it to take the edge off. But as it wears off, the brain rebounds, and anxiety comes back stronger: the "hangxiety" many people know well. Over time, drinking to manage anxiety tends to make both worse. That's why we treat them together.

How anxiety is assessed

There's no blood test for anxiety. It's assessed through a conversation about your symptoms, how long they've lasted and how they affect your life, sometimes with short questionnaires. On your first call and in your first days with us, our clinical team builds a clear picture of what you're dealing with.

Signs it might be time for support

  • You worry most of the day, and you can't switch it off
  • Your body feels it: a racing heart, tight chest, stomach problems, headaches
  • You avoid places, people or tasks because of how they make you feel
  • Sleep is broken, or you wake already on edge
  • You've had panic attacks, or you're scared of having one
  • You're using alcohol, pills or other substances to calm down
  • Work, relationships or everyday life are starting to suffer

If several of these sound familiar, it's not a weakness. It's a signal that your nervous system needs real support.

How we treat anxiety

We treat anxiety from the mind and the body at the same time, because that's where it lives.

For the mind

  • CBT: we map the thought patterns that feed the anxiety, test them, and practise new responses until they become automatic.
  • DBT skills: practical tools for calming yourself in the moment, tolerating discomfort and handling difficult people.
  • Trauma-informed counselling: if the anxiety has roots in past experiences, we work with them gently and at your pace.

For the body

  • 9D Breathwork: guided sessions that help the nervous system move out of fight-or-flight and release tension that talking can't reach.
  • Mindfulness and meditation: short daily practices that train your attention to stay in the present instead of racing ahead.
  • Movement, sleep and nutrition: yoga, swimming and walks, a steady sleep routine, and meals from our on-site chef that support a calmer system.

For your life

  • A plan for home: what to do when anxiety spikes, who to call, and the habits that keep it manageable.
  • Family involvement when it helps, so the people around you understand what you need.
  • Medication review: where appropriate, our psychiatrist, Dr I Gusti Rai (SpKJ), reviews or adjusts medication. All medication decisions are made by him.

Why these therapies work: what the research says

  • CBT has the strongest evidence. International clinical guidelines, including the UK's NICE guidance, recommend CBT as a first-line psychological treatment for anxiety disorders. It has the largest evidence base of any talking therapy for anxiety.
  • Exposure is the active ingredient. Gradually and safely facing what you avoid, with support, is one of the most reliable ways to reduce anxiety long term. We build it into your therapy at a pace that feels manageable.
  • Breathwork as a complement. A 2023 meta-analysis of randomised trials in Scientific Reports found breathwork was linked to small-to-moderate reductions in stress, anxiety and depression. Its authors urged caution, and a later large trial found smaller differences, so we use 9D Breathwork alongside proven therapy, not instead of it.
  • Lifestyle matters. Sleep, movement and cutting back on alcohol and caffeine all reduce the background level of anxiety, which makes therapy work better.

Your programme

Every programme is built around you. Most people stay 28, 60 or 90 days.

  • Tailored 28-day retreat: IDR 346,000,000. Ask us about pricing for 60 and 90 days.
  • One client at a time: no group therapy, no dormitory, no timetable built for someone else.
  • Aftercare included: every client leaves with a plan. Our separate 4-Week Outpatient Care Package, based in Bali, is there if you want extra support before flying home.

Why people choose Holistic Recovery Bali

  • All our attention is on you. We only ever work with one client, or one couple, at a time.
  • A team who get it. Program Director Nev Doidge, counsellor David Elsey (Master of Counselling, trained in CBT, DBT and Hakomi somatic psychotherapy), manager and certified addiction counsellor Wayan Eka (Bimbim), and psychiatrist Dr I Gusti Rai (SpKJ). Many of the team have lived experience of recovery.
  • A quiet place to reset. A private setting, well away from the work, people and routines that keep you wound up.
  • Skills for Monday morning. You practise the tools every day here, so they still work when you're back at your desk at home.

Is anxiety treatment in Bali effective?

Yes. Anxiety responds well to evidence-based therapy like CBT and DBT, and a calm, private setting gives you the space to practise those skills every day without the usual pressures.

Do I have to have a diagnosis to come?

No. Many people come because they know something isn't right. We assess you on your first call and in your first days with us.

Will I be in group therapy?

No. We work with one client, or one couple, at a time, so every session is one-to-one and private.

Can you help if I'm also drinking or using to cope?
