Depression isn't just sadness. It's getting through the day on autopilot, losing interest in things you used to love, and wondering when you'll feel like yourself again. For some people it's a dark season. For others it's been there so long it feels like part of who they are.
It isn't. Holistic Recovery Bali offers private depression treatment in Bali, with the time, space and care to start feeling like you again.

Understanding depression
Depression is a real health condition that affects mood, energy, sleep, appetite, concentration and how you see yourself. It can follow loss, stress, trauma or burnout, or arrive with no obvious cause at all.
It often comes with company: anxiety, exhaustion, drinking more than you'd like, or pulling away from the people who care about you. That's why we look at the whole picture, not just the symptoms.
Depression is common. The World Health Organization estimates that around 332 million people worldwide live with depression, about 1 in 18 adults. It's also one of the most treatable conditions in mental health, yet even in wealthy countries only about a third of people with depression get treatment.
What's happening in the brain and body
Depression isn't a weakness or a choice. Long periods of stress keep the body's stress hormones running high, which disrupts sleep, appetite and energy. Over time, the brain's reward system gets quieter, so things that used to feel good stop feeling like anything. That's why "just cheer up" doesn't work.
It also changes how you think. Depression pulls attention towards the negative and makes it harder to remember good times. You pull back from people and activities because you have no energy, and the less you do, the lower you feel. Good treatment works on both sides of that loop: how you think and what you do.
Why depression and alcohol so often go together
Alcohol can feel like relief at the end of a hard day, but it's a depressant. It disrupts deep sleep, lowers mood in the days after drinking and makes therapy and medication less effective. Many people find their mood lifts noticeably within a few weeks of stopping. That's why we treat drinking and depression together, never one without the other.
How depression is assessed
There's no blood test for depression. It's assessed through a conversation about your mood, sleep, energy, appetite and how long things have felt this way, sometimes with short questionnaires. Our clinical team also checks for things that can look like depression, such as thyroid problems or the after-effects of alcohol and drugs.
Signs it might be time for support
- Low mood most days for two weeks or more
- Losing interest in things you used to enjoy
- Sleeping too much, or barely at all
- Feeling exhausted, flat or numb
- Struggling to concentrate or make decisions
- Feeling worthless, guilty or like a burden
- Using alcohol or other substances to get through
- Withdrawing from friends, family or work
How we treat depression
Recovery from depression is rarely one breakthrough. It's lots of small things, done consistently, with the right support. That's what a private retreat makes possible.
For the mind
- CBT: spotting the harsh, all-or-nothing thinking that keeps depression going, and building a kinder, more realistic inner voice.
- Behavioural activation: gently rebuilding routine, connection and the activities that bring meaning back.
- Trauma-informed counselling: where loss or past experiences sit underneath, we work through them at your pace.
- DBT skills: tools for managing overwhelming emotions and difficult days.
For the body
- 9D Breathwork: sessions that help release stored emotion and reconnect you with your body.
- Movement and sunlight: daily walks, swimming and yoga in Bali's natural light, which support mood, energy and sleep.
- Nutrition: meals from our on-site chef designed to steady energy and support brain health.
- Sleep: a consistent rhythm that helps everything else work better.
For your life
- Psychiatric review: our psychiatrist, Dr I Gusti Rai (SpKJ), reviews medication where appropriate and makes all medication decisions.
- Family involvement when it helps, so home becomes a place of support.
- A plan for home: early warning signs, daily anchors, and who to call when things dip.
Why these therapies work: what the research says
- Talking therapy is a first-line treatment. International guidelines, including the UK's NICE guidance on depression, recommend psychological therapies such as CBT and behavioural activation as first-line treatments, alongside or instead of medication depending on severity.
- Behavioural activation breaks the withdrawal loop. It works by gently reintroducing activities that bring pleasure, achievement and connection, so mood follows action rather than waiting for motivation to come first.
- Exercise works, and the evidence is strong. A 2024 review in the BMJ pooled 218 trials with over 14,000 people. Walking or jogging, yoga and strength training all reduced depression symptoms, and more intense exercise helped more. The authors rated the certainty of evidence as low, but the effects were comparable to talking therapy. That's why movement is part of every day at HRB.
- Breathwork as a complement. A 2023 meta-analysis of randomised trials in Scientific Reports found breathwork was linked to small-to-moderate reductions in stress, anxiety and depression. Its authors urged caution, and a later large trial found smaller differences, so we use 9D Breathwork alongside proven therapy, not instead of it.
- Routine and sleep matter. Regular sleep, daylight and meals give the body a steady rhythm, which makes every other part of treatment work better.
