Benzodiazepines like Valium, Xanax and Klonopin can be a lifeline for anxiety, panic or sleepless nights. But taken for more than a few weeks, the body comes to depend on them, and many people find they can't stop, even when they want to.
Holistic Recovery Bali offers private benzodiazepine detox in Bali, built around a careful, medically supervised taper and one-to-one therapy for the anxiety and sleep problems that started it all.

Understanding benzodiazepine dependence
What benzos do
Benzodiazepines boost GABA, the brain's main calming chemical. That's why they work so quickly for panic, anxiety and sleeplessness. But the brain adapts within weeks: it becomes less responsive to its own GABA and leans on the medication instead. That's why benzos are generally recommended for short-term use only, and why so many people who take them for months or years find they can't stop easily, even at a prescribed dose.
Withdrawal and rebound anxiety
When the dose drops, the brain's calming system is suddenly under-powered. People can feel more anxious than before they started, sleep badly, and notice tremor, sensitivity to light and sound, or a sense of unreality. This rebound is temporary, but it's convincing, and it's one of the main reasons people go back to the medication. Understanding that it's withdrawal, not your original anxiety returning for good, makes a real difference.
Benzos with alcohol or opioids
Benzodiazepines, alcohol and opioids all slow breathing and the nervous system. Combining them greatly increases the risk of overdose. If you're using more than one, tell us on the first call so we can plan safely.
Why benzo withdrawal needs care
Stopping benzodiazepines suddenly can be dangerous. After regular use, the brain adjusts its own calming system. Remove the drug too quickly and it can rebound hard, with severe anxiety, insomnia, tremors, confusion and, in some cases, seizures.
That's why benzo detox is done slowly, as a gradual reduction over weeks rather than days, with medical monitoring the whole way. Please don't stop on your own. Talk to us or your doctor first.
Common benzodiazepines
- Diazepam (Valium)
- Alprazolam (Xanax)
- Clonazepam (Klonopin, Rivotril)
- Lorazepam (Ativan)
- Temazepam and similar sleeping tablets
Signs you may be dependent
- You've taken them daily for more than a few weeks
- You feel anxious, shaky or unwell when a dose is late
- You need a higher dose for the same effect
- You've tried to cut down and the anxiety came back worse
- You're using them with alcohol or opioids
- You're getting them from more than one source
How we keep your detox safe
- Assessment before arrival: your doses, history, other substances and health, so your taper is planned, not guessed.
- A gradual, supervised taper: reduced step by step, often switching to a longer-acting benzodiazepine first, led by our psychiatrist, Dr I Gusti Rai (SpKJ), who makes all medication decisions, with our medical team.
- Close monitoring: someone checking on you and adjusting the plan as needed.
- A longer stay where needed: benzo tapers can take time, and we won't rush it.
How we treat what's underneath
For most people, benzos started as a solution to anxiety or sleep. The detox only lasts if those are treated too.

Why these therapies work: what the research says
- A slow, individual taper is the safe standard. Medical guidelines, and the World Health Organization, warn that stopping benzodiazepines abruptly can cause seizures, and that coming off them can be a lengthy process needing tailored management. Common guidance suggests reducing by around 5–10% every one to two weeks, slowing down if symptoms become hard to manage.
- Some people need longer than 28 days. Your detox is assisted here, and if a long-term or high-dose taper needs to continue after you leave, we plan it with your doctor at home so it carries on safely.
- CBT is the first-line treatment for anxiety. International guidelines, including NICE, recommend CBT as a first-line treatment for anxiety disorders. Learning these skills while you taper helps you handle rebound anxiety without reaching for a tablet.
- Breathwork, sleep and movement as complements. A 2023 meta-analysis in Scientific Reports found breathwork was linked to small-to-moderate reductions in stress and anxiety, though the evidence is still limited. Combined with regular exercise and a steady sleep routine, it gives your nervous system natural ways to settle.
