Some experiences don't stay in the past. They come back as nightmares, flashbacks, a body that's always braced, or a numbness that keeps people at arm's length. Many people who come to us didn't call it trauma at first. They just knew they couldn't keep living on high alert.

Holistic Recovery Bali offers private trauma therapy in Bali, with one client at a time, so you set the pace and nothing is rushed.

Understanding trauma

Trauma isn't defined by what happened. It's defined by how it affected you. It can come from a single event, like an accident, assault or sudden loss, or from long-term experiences like childhood neglect, an abusive relationship, or years in a high-pressure job such as emergency services or the military.

When the nervous system gets stuck in survival mode, it keeps reacting as if the danger is still here. That's not a choice or a weakness. It's biology, and it can be eased.

Trauma often sits underneath other struggles: anxiety, depression, anger, relationship problems, and drinking or drug use to quieten it. Treating the trauma is often what finally makes the rest shift.

What's happening in the brain and body

During a traumatic event, the brain switches into survival mode: fight, flight or freeze. Memories formed in that state are stored differently from everyday ones. They can feel fragmented, vivid and "now" rather than "then", which is why a smell, a sound or a tone of voice can bring the whole experience flooding back.

The body keeps score too. Many people with trauma live with a nervous system that's either stuck on high alert (racing heart, poor sleep, jumpiness) or shut down (numbness, exhaustion, feeling far away from everything). Neither is a character flaw. Both are signs of a system that learned to protect you and hasn't yet learned it's safe to stand down.

Trauma, PTSD and substance use

Not everyone who goes through something traumatic develops PTSD. Many people recover naturally with time and support. When symptoms last longer than a month and get in the way of life, it may be PTSD, and that's when proper treatment makes a real difference.

Alcohol and drugs are some of the most common ways people try to quieten trauma symptoms. They work for a while, then make sleep, mood and nightmares worse. Treating both together, in a setting where you feel safe, gives the best chance of lasting change.

Signs trauma may be affecting you

  • Intrusive memories, flashbacks or nightmares
  • Feeling constantly on edge, jumpy or easily startled
  • Avoiding people, places or conversations that remind you
  • Feeling numb, detached or cut off from others
  • Sudden anger, shame or guilt that feels out of proportion
  • Trouble sleeping or concentrating
  • Using alcohol, drugs or work to keep the feelings away

How we treat trauma

Trauma therapy has to feel safe before it can work. That's why we start with stability, build trust, and only then work with the harder material, always at your pace.

For the mind

  • Trauma-informed counselling: a steady, respectful space to understand what happened and how it still affects you, without being pushed to relive it.
  • CBT: working with the beliefs trauma leaves behind, like "it was my fault" or "I'm not safe anywhere".
  • DBT skills: tools for grounding yourself when emotions or memories flood in.
  • Somatic approaches: noticing where trauma lives in the body and learning to settle it. Our counsellor David Elsey is trained in Hakomi, a gentle, body-centred psychotherapy.

For the body

  • 9D Breathwork: guided sessions that help the nervous system release held tension and move out of survival mode, with a facilitator alongside you throughout.
  • Mindfulness and grounding: simple practices to bring you back to the present when the past pulls at you.
  • Movement and nature: yoga, swimming and time outdoors to help the body feel safe again.

For your life

  • Relationships: support to reconnect with partners and family, and family sessions where they help.
  • Substance use: if you've been drinking or using to cope, we treat that alongside the trauma.
  • A plan for home: grounding tools, warning signs, and ongoing support once you leave.

Why these therapies work: what the research says

  • Trauma-focused therapy works best. International guidelines, including NICE and the World Health Organization, recommend trauma-focused therapies, such as trauma-focused CBT and EMDR, as first-line treatments for PTSD. They help the brain process traumatic memories so they lose their grip. At HRB, trauma work is delivered by qualified members of our clinical team, and if we think a specialist approach we don't offer would suit you better, we'll tell you honestly.
  • Stabilisation comes first. Learning grounding and emotional regulation skills (like those from DBT) before deeper work helps people feel safe enough to engage, and lowers the risk of becoming overwhelmed.
  • What doesn't help. Guidelines advise against routine psychological "debriefing" straight after a traumatic event. We never push anyone to retell their story before they're ready.
  • Breathwork as a complement. A 2023 meta-analysis in Scientific Reports found breathwork was linked to small-to-moderate reductions in stress, anxiety and depression, though the evidence is still limited. For trauma, we adapt sessions carefully and plan them with your therapist. 9D Breathwork supports therapy; it doesn't replace it.
  • Movement and routine. Exercise, sleep and regular rhythms help calm an over-alert nervous system and reduce the background anxiety that often comes with trauma.

Your programme

  • Programme lengths: 28, 60 or 90 days. Trauma work often benefits from a longer stay.
