Understanding cocaine addiction

Cocaine floods the brain with dopamine, the chemical behind pleasure and motivation. Over time the brain adapts: you need more to feel the same, and normal life feels flat without it. That's why stopping on your own is so hard, even when you genuinely want to.

How common is it?

More common than most people think. The UN Office on Drugs and Crime's 2025 World Drug Report estimates that 25 million people used cocaine in 2023, up from 17 million a decade earlier. Cocaine is now the fastest-growing illicit drug market in the world, and the people we see are often high-functioning professionals who never expected to need help.

Cocaine and alcohol: a dangerous mix

Most people who use cocaine also drink. When the two are combined, the liver makes a third substance called cocaethylene, which stays in the body longer than cocaine and is harder on the heart. A 2024 systematic review linked using cocaine and alcohol together to a higher risk of death, and cocaethylene has been associated with an 18 to 25-fold increase in the risk of sudden death. That's why we treat the drinking and the cocaine together.

The mental health side

Cocaine is closely linked with anxiety, low mood, irritability and, at higher doses, paranoia. The crash afterwards can bring dark thoughts. Many people also find that cocaine was covering something underneath: stress, burnout, ADHD-type restlessness, trauma or depression. Lasting recovery means understanding and treating that too.

Signs it might be time for help

  • You use more often, or in bigger amounts, than you plan to
  • You've tried to cut back and keep ending up back there
  • Comedowns leave you anxious, low or unable to function
  • You're spending money you can't afford, or hiding how much you use
  • It's affecting your work, relationships or health
  • You drink heavily alongside it, or mix it with other substances
  • The people close to you have said they're worried

What stopping feels like

Cocaine withdrawal is usually less physically dangerous than alcohol withdrawal, but it can be very hard emotionally. In the first days and weeks, people often feel exhausted, low, irritable and anxious, with strong cravings and disrupted sleep. Low mood after stopping can be serious, so having support around you matters.

If you've also been drinking heavily or using other drugs, withdrawal can be more complex. That's why every client is assessed before arrival, and stabilisation is supervised by our medical team: our psychiatrist, Dr I Gusti Rai, nurses and trained staff.

How we treat cocaine addiction

For the mind

  • CBT: Understanding your triggers, from stress and boredom to particular people and places, and building new responses.
  • DBT skills: Riding out cravings and big emotions without acting on them.
  • Trauma-informed counselling: Working on what the cocaine was helping you avoid.
  • Relapse prevention: A concrete plan for weekends, work events and the situations where you used to use.

For the body

  • Stabilisation: Sleep, nutrition and rest to help your brain and body recover from the highs and crashes.
  • 9D Breathwork: Releasing tension and finding a natural sense of calm and energy.
  • Movement: Exercise, swimming and yoga to rebuild energy and mood naturally.
  • Nutrition: Meals from our on-site chef to repair what's been depleted.

For your life

  • Work and lifestyle planning: Returning to demanding jobs and social circles without falling back in.
  • Family support where it helps.
  • Aftercare: A plan for home and ongoing support.

Why these therapies work: what the research says

  • There's no pill for cocaine addiction. Unlike alcohol or opioids, there's currently no approved medication that treats cocaine dependence. That makes psychological therapy the core of treatment, and why one-to-one time with skilled clinicians matters so much.
  • CBT and relapse prevention. CBT is one of the most studied treatments for stimulant use. It helps you map your personal triggers (Friday nights, certain people, stress at work, alcohol) and practise new responses before you need them.
  • Treating alcohol at the same time. Because drinking so often leads to using, and the combination carries extra heart risk, cutting back or stopping alcohol is a key part of staying off cocaine.
  • Exercise helps mood recover. A 2024 BMJ review of 218 trials found walking, jogging, yoga and strength training all reduced depression symptoms. That matters in early recovery, when low mood and flatness are common.
  • Breathwork as a complement. A 2023 meta-analysis in Scientific Reports found breathwork was linked to small-to-moderate reductions in stress and anxiety, though the evidence is still limited. We use 9D Breathwork alongside therapy, not instead of it.
